Teaching chemistry at high school - experimental part, proposals of chemical experiments suitable for chemical education at high school

The experiment is an integral part of chemistry education. The use of food and natural materials effectively connects chemistry learning with everyday life. Suitable foods for this purpose are, for example, lentil-shaped candies (lentils). There are lentils from many manufacturers on the market, differing in the types of dyes used. The dyes used are both natural and synthetic. The diverse properties of these dyes allow the use of lentils for teaching different topics in chemistry. Lentils coloured with natural dyes can be used for laboratory exercises focusing on pH and acid-base indicators. In combination with experiments with extracts from natural materials, they can also be used to teach qualitative analysis and UV-VIS spectroscopy. In the diploma thesis, two laboratory exercises were designed on the analysis of dyes used in the food industry, which were later validated on secondary school students Synthetic dyes often differ in their polarity, which can be used in laboratory exercises focused on separation methods, specifically in this work for teaching chromatography and extraction. The position of the chemical experiment at the time of ICT - aluminum and its compounds

The main goal of the thesis is to describe a position of the real experiment in chemistry at the beginning of the 21 century and to contribute to solution of speculations if this didactic tool is or is not at current schools such a rarity as it's often described. The starting point of the thesis is extensive research of the literature related to history of natural science literacy which is condition not only for the right experiment interpretation but also of its suitable usage in the lessons. The theoretical part observes also the ensuring of the chemical experiment in the curricular documents and its position in the chemistry teaching in recent past. The experiment is a dynamic visualia therefore the visualias are classified in particular part of the thesis and their occurrence and function are described - in today's information society, chemistry textbooks, as a part of hypermedia programs for chemistry teaching and in lessons in general. Role of Experiments in Chemical Education at Waldorf Lyceum Compared to "Ordinary" Gymnasium in the Czech Republic

4 Abstract This bachelor thesis examines the role of experiments in Chemistry lessons at Waldorf schools and roughly compares the approach towards their implementation into lessons at Waldorf schools and selected secondary schools (gymnasia) in the Czech Republic. The first part is dedicated to the description of Waldorf school specifics. The second part gives results of a general survey focused on the ways of use and frequency of experiments at selected secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Results of this survey and visits to laboratory practicals at one high school were confronted and discussed in contrast with results of inspections of classes at two Waldorf schools; Waldorf Lyceum in Prague and Primary and Secondary Waldorf School in Semily. Approaches to experiments at both types of schools are compared and arguments for and against are given. On the whole we can say that Waldorf schools take experiments (demonstrations) as an integral part of every Chemistry lesson and are essential for Chemistry education. However laboratory practicals are rare and the amount of information in lessons is smaller than at ordinary secondary schools observed. Experimentalteaching of organic chemistry oriented on education

Experiments are indisputably the most popular part of chemistry lessons for students. When an experiment is performed with the material commonly known like foodstuff then interest of students increases. Presented bachelor thesis shows experiments with chocolate lentils of two producers, Nestle and Mars, Inc. Interest is focused on colorants - a topic of organic chemistry which is directly mentioned in basic curricular documents RVP G. The experiments demonstrate influence of pH environment on sensitivity of artificial colorings and natural food dyes contained in chocolate lentils. By using these food colorings retention factor and its dependence on TLC (thin layer chromatography) conditions is explained. Absorbance spectra of colorants are included. The thesis presents new possibilities of scientific approach about lecture of colorants. The aim of presented bachelor thesis is focused on importance of monitoring the composition in food products. Producers might change the composition of their products and that's why described experiments can't be followed easily. ABSTRACT Human Protection in Emergency (HPE) is the subject of this theoretical research thesis. The theoretical part focuses on a set of human protection in emergency and military training in the broader historical context but also legislative context. Space is devoted to the unambiguous definition of related terms. Furthermore the course curriculum reform with emphasis on the level of secondary vocational education. The practical part is focused on the evaluation of the research that was conducted among the students of first and second years of nonscience oriented secondary vocational schools. Data for the research was obtained by questionnaire survey and analyzed the statistical method. The work also includes a draft concept for the implementation of the teaching of human protection in emergencies. The objective of this proposal is to ensure access to information concerning the HPE for students but also for teachers and that contribute to the formation of desirable patterns of behavior for participation in the incident. Eva Hrobařová Name: The teaching materials for chemical education - experimental and practical chemistry with different kind of food ABSTRACT: In this thesis I elaborated the theme "The teaching material for active chemical education - experimental and practical chemistry with different kind of food". I created a questionnaire with name "Availability of laboratories and schoolrooms of chemistry in college". The results of this questionnaire were a base for choice of the experiments with different kind of food. Each experiment is completed by photos and a few questions for students. In this work I also analysed several thesis about practical and experimental chemistry. In this thesis I lay stress on importance of experimental and practice chemistry in colleges in Czech Republic. My task was to create easy teaching materials for active education and the utilization of easy experiments to illustrate theory. The experiments are very easy, it's not necessary many tools and it's not even necessary to use chemical laboratory. .
Experiments in chemistry education at secondary schools - motivation and curriculum acquisition

Title: Chemical experiments in chemistry teaching and learning at secondary schools - motivation and curriculum acquisition Summary: This diploma thesis focuses on chemical experiments and their usage in learning phases - namely in motivation phase, acquisition phase, retention phase and control phase. On the set of tried experiments, their possible usage in chemistry teaching and learning in motivation and acquisition phases is demonstrated. Instructions, explanation, comments and photographies are attached to each experiment. For usage in acquisition phase worsheets have been made for each experiment to improve curriculum acquisition.
Design and preparation of database of chemistry experiments for chemistry education

This bachelor thesis involved the design and creation of a Database of chemical experiments, which serves as a source of demonstration experiments. Videos to individual experiments were delivered using external links. These individual experiments were chosen using criteria from teachers obtained via a general survey. The main criteria were time and material factors, availability of chemicals and also clearness of experiments. A template was made for each experiment, including all the information required. Experiments, for which no suitable video was found, were carried out and recorded. The resulting database includes 58 experiments divided into 25 main categories. Some videos are included in more than one category. The database was then placed on the website www.studiumchemie.cz, the web portal of Charles University Faculty of Natural Science for secondary school Chemistry teaching support.
Chemical experiments in high school education - design of experiments focusing on color chemistry

Chemical experiments are an important part of high school chemistry education. The main advantage of chemical experiments is fact that pupils effectively connect their theoretical knowledge with what they can see. Furthermore, pupils' competencies improve. This bachelor thesis focuses on experiments with blue colored chemicals which can be easily obtained. Chemicals used in these experiments are common compounds found in school laboratories or easily obtainable food, beverages etc. The theoretical part of this bachelor thesis contains information about structure and chemical properties of the chemicals which make a basis for experiments mentioned in the practical part. Additionally, experiments described in the practical part, which were designed and performed, are based on most known experiments with the chemicals described in the theoretical part. Further description of these experiments and their photo documentation can be found in the practical part, too. Evaluation of these experiments involves their integration into thematically focused worksheet. Four thematically focused worksheets were created according to the national curriculum of the Czech Republic for grammar schools (RVP G) and to the school curriculum of Gymnázium Botičská (ŠVP).
Proposal of chemical experiments suitable for secondary school education

The most enjoyable part of Chemistry as a subject in High school was, is, and always will be working in a laboratory, where all experiments are performed by the pupils. Chemical experiments with an easily accessible raw material such as pills of Spirulina and Chlorella are expected to increase the interest of students. For this Bachelor's work, experiments were designed and the task was performed utilizing commercial sources of Spirulina and Chlorella, which are sold as food supplements and considered to be superfoods nowadays due to their high protein content. In this Bachelor's work attention is paid to the pigments that Spirulina and Chlorella contain. The main topic of this work are pigments, which are mentioned in the context of Organic Chemistry lessons in the RVP G documents. First, experiments with these pigments were performed, namely their extraction with various solvents and chromatography. Subsequently, it was determined by HPLC and UV-Vis spectroscopy which pigments are extracted with which solvent. Based on these results, materials suitable for teaching chemistry at secondary schools were created, especially on the topic of separation methods and polarity of substances.
